Case Study - Ambulance Service

As part of an ongoing initiative looking at different approaches to tackle health and wellbeing in the ambulance service we were asked by a member of staff to approach the management team to see if we could go in and run the training for his team. They agreed and we ran just a half day session and had 12 staff members attend. The training was run at the station and was led by EF training and a paramedic colleague.

Pre-Course Questionnaire Results

We were quite surprised by some of these results but not by others. It was really good to note that all the staff who attended did something outside work that they identified as helping them cope better with their work. But on reflection during the training may realised that in fact some of what they were doing was not quite as helpful as they had thought! Its not surprising given the nature of the work that most staff felt that the work was very intrusive and affected them deeply but worrying to not how many felt pressure to work whilst ill. This figure though is borne out by the results of the NHS staff survey which found the same thing. All the staff were surprised that they had all ticked yes to being irritated by the people they care for and this generated a long discussion about why this was and none of them had attributed this to a symptom of compassion fatigue so many were relived that this was the case. They felt that this did not reflect how they actually did their job and all were still very positive about their work and felt that they made a difference.

As part of the training we asked the staff to give the Ambulance Service some ideas on how to make it a more emotionally healthy place to work and the comments are below:

  • Flexitime

  • Reduce targets/times

  • More staff and equipment

  • A Spa or gym or complimentary therapy available to staff at work

  • Time with colleagues every day for tea and coffee

  • To get off on time without feeling guilty

  • Ambulance FM

  • Out of hours services that wash

  • Management on nights

  • Equipping ambulances

  • Extra protected time

  • Travelling back from hospital is protected time

  • Better bags

  • Summer uniforms

  • Apps for referrals

  • Work mobile phones

  • Ambulances that work

  • CPD during work time not on days off

  • Video conferencing

  • Satellite Hub

  • Align retirement age and pre-retirement preparation

  • Ambulance Service to have own taxi service

Some comments from the evaluation forms

  • It made a real difference to hear things from someone who is obviously very passionate about this subject rather than just reading from a PPT in a mandatory training session

  • I’ve often had certain moods at home which I wouldn’t have connected with work but this has helped me recognise the cause so hopefully will deal with it

  • There were lots of things we discussed today that I had never thought about

  • I realised after today that how I feel has got a name which really helped.

  • Good course I am now aware so I can prepare myself

  • Good day with some thought provoking discussions out of room environment

  • Thankyou, really useful session

  • Excellent points to consider

  • Love the mood food!

  • I could see how parts of this course would apply to me and how we dip in and out of the categories without resilience

  • Everyone needs this training

  • This training should be the first thing you do when you join the service and then do it every year like the other health and safety stuff
