BACKGROUND
CHALLENGES
Risks at work
Staff wellbeing
Team Dynamics
High workload
Dealing with clients with complex needs
EF training was approached to run an in-person training day for victim support providers within a Police Constabulary. We had meetings with a senior manager, Head of Operations and the Commissioner before the training to better understand the specific challenges facing the team. The day was run off-site at a local venue and attended by 20 delegates from a number of victim support providers that the Constabulary either
commissions or grants funds to.
PRE COURSE
FEEDBACK
“I came away from the training thinking there was a lot that resonated with me”
“I will use this training to support my team as their line manager, as well as protect myself“
“One of the best and most thought provoking courses I've done”
The result of the pre-course questionnaire demonstrated that the work was having an emotional and physical impact on staff, both at work and at home. 94% indicated that work was making them stressed and anxious, leaving them feeling irritable and short-tempered when they got home. Almost all the staff (88%) admitted that they feel guilty when they have to take time off sick, with many stating that they will go to work when they are ill so they don't let their colleagues and clients down. Three quarters of staff also commented that work is regularly intruding into their home life, and 59% are regularly working longer hours than they are contracted for.
POST COURSE
RESULTS
Cultural shift towards wellbeing
Further training has been booked
Training has helped resolve the root of problems within the team
The results from the 3-month post-course questionnaire validate that although the majority of staff were suffering from symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, they were unaware of the concepts of either Compassion Fatigue or Vicarious Trauma. The majority of staff felt that since the training, they had not only noticed a difference in the way they felt about work but also within the team itself. Positive changes within staff had also been noticed at home by friends and family, as well as staff confirming that they were fulfilling the promises made to themselves during training. Overall, all the staff found the training a positive experience and felt that ongoing Compassion Fatigue training and reviews would be beneficial for themselves and their teams. Further training has been booked!
