Leading To Recharge
Managers play a crucial role in helping teams see that rest is not a reward for good work; it’s a requirement for sustainable practice.
Just as the natural world takes time to rest in winter to prepare for new growth, so too must organisations allow space for renewal.
Here are some ways you can cultivate that culture:
Normalise conversations about fatigue and rest
Encourage open dialogue about emotional load and workload. When leaders speak honestly about their own need for rest, it helps dissolve stigma.
Build wellness into the workplace
Use quieter periods for reflection, team learning, or wellbeing activities — a natural reflection of nature’s seasonal slowdown.
Recognise the emotional cost of caring
Acknowledge that Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma are real. Providing reflective supervision or well-being check-ins can make a tangible difference.
Protect restorative time.
Model healthy boundaries. Avoid praising overwork; instead, value presence, empathy, and sustainability.
Celebrate renewal
As spring follows winter, plan opportunities for new ideas, shared successes, and creative re-energising — ensuring that rest leads naturally to growth.
Some Winter Teambuilding Ideas
“The Light We Bring” Reflection Circle
Each team member shares one thing they’re proud of from the past year, and one quality they bring to the team (e.g., humour, calmness, creativity).
Purpose: Builds gratitude and mutual appreciation.
Time: 30–45 minutes
Setting: Indoors, low lighting, maybe candles or fairy lights for atmosphere
“Roots and Growth” Team Reflection
Provide paper leaves or roots. On the “roots,” staff write what grounded them this year (values, routines, relationships). On the “leaves,” they write hopes for the next season. Display them on a paper tree.
Purpose: Symbolises winter rest and spring renewal.
Time: 30–60 minutes
Setting: Staff room, meeting area, or wellbeing event.
Lighthearted Winter Team Activities
Even small, playful moments can re-energise teams and spark joy.
Winter Quiz or Escape Room
Create a short quiz around winter traditions, fun facts, or the team’s own inside jokes.
Or try a “Winter Wellness Escape Room” with puzzles focused on teamwork, problem-solving, and wellbeing themes.
For Managers: Embedding Renewal into Team Culture
Managers can turn winter team-building into an opportunity for sustainable wellbeing:
Schedule a “No-Meeting Afternoon” once a month for personal reflection or creative catch-up.
Host a “Wellbeing Breakfast” where the focus is conversation, not agenda.
Invite a speaker or coach to run a short workshop on rest, compassion fatigue, or renewal in caring roles.
Gift a shared symbol — such as a small plant for the staff room — representing renewal and care for one another.
